Harambe is more than a trip. It is a gathering rooted in memory, lineage, healing, celebration, and the responsibility we carry to remain connected to one another across generations.

At the center of this story are the family members whose love, labor, values, and example continue to nourish us even in their physical absence.

The Harambe Legacy Begins

The inaugural Harambe Family Gathering was held in August 2023 in the beautiful coastal setting of Destin, Florida. That gathering marked the beginning of an intentional family tradition — a space for restoration, joy, reflection, and reconnection.

although the family was already grieving the loss of Olga Patricia Reuben, Shirley Joan Ann Reuben was present for that first gathering, making the Destin experience especially significant. In many ways, it became one of the last major family trips shared with her before her passing, giving the inaugural gathering even deeper meaning as both celebration and living memory.

Now, three years later, the second Harambe gathering builds upon that foundation — honoring those who came before us, strengthening relationships in the present, and intentionally creating conditions for future generations to know where they come from and who they belong to.

"Harambe is not a one-time event. It is an emerging family legacy practice — one that honors those who came before us, strengthens relationships in the present, and intentionally creates conditions for future generations to know where they come from and who they belong to."
